Unexpected Visit to the V.E.T.

Mom and Dad woke me up early from my 8 hour nap today. They came home about an hour earlier than usual and that cut into my beauty rest.
Not only that but they took me to see the V.E.T.!
What up with that?
Anyway, I guess I have some blood in my urine and they got all worried about it. The V.E.T. took some of my pee straight outta my tummy....they wanted it to be sterile when they tested it. Turns out I have a bladder infection and have to take an antibiotic for the next week. The worst part is that I have to go back and have that test done again. Mom and Dad said they could hear me crying while they were "taking" it from me.
Fortunately, no evidence of stones.
Another thing they did was trim my nails and squeeze my bootie. I have to say, I don't like having my nails trimmed but they were way too long....thanks a lot Mom and Dad! You would think pawrents could be a bit more responsible with those things wouldn't ya?
That isn't all.....
they also took blood right outta my neck! I was a good girl when the doc did that and didn't move a muscle.
Mom forgot the camera so there are no photos of my at the V.E.T.'s office today. This post has too many words and not enough photos so I requested that Mom add one in for you to admire.
You guys all know that my mom is all concerned about my hair loss. Well, she had to bring it up again, even though that isn't why we were there. She told Dr. Harsha that it has gotten significantly worse than before and he said he didn't think it was allergies now because it is very symmetrical. That is why they took my blood.....to test for Hypothyroidism or Cushing's Disease.
Dr. Harsha explained the two to us and said that Hypothyroidism is what he is hoping for. Although, Mom said she felt like he thinks it is Cushing's. We don't really know much about either disease but it seems that Cushing's is much harder to control and can cut your life short. So we are hoping for Hypothyroidism too!
I told Momma I was fine and she didn't need to worry but you know how moms are.....
So, just like some of our furiends, we are in a waiting game until we get the results back, hopefully Friday.

Most of the time lately, when I get my photos taken I am under a blanket or have on a shirt to keep me warm. Momma took off my shirt and made me take my picture nekkid!
I let her but only to show you guys how bad my hair loss has gotten recently. Here are 2 pics Mom took just a little while ago.

I have no furs on my sides or my tail!
It looks like I have a mohawk when I get my hackles up cause that fur is still there.
We will let you know what we find out but Mom thought some prayers and 'power of the paw' might help.

Twix, I'm so sorry to learn about your troubles. I did read up on Cushings a little, just in case and have read that it can be successfully treated for years with early intervention, so I guess your Mom was pretty smart to keep after the VET about it. You certainly have our prayers and will try to send good vibes your way as well.

We are sending good thoughts your way! What a traumatic day for you.

We have some greyhound friends with thyroid problems, and while it's not the best, it's not as bad as Cushing's. Hopefully they figure out what's wrong.

Dear Sweet Twix, I just can't believe that VET did all those awful thingys to you.
Stealing your pees right out of your tummy and taking blood from your neck. I won't be able to sleep after hearing all this.
Well, at least you will feel better when the meds kick in.
I think you should tell your dad that you are trying to look like he does. Except that he only shaves the furs off his head. I am sure that you don't have that scary thingy.
You KNOW that I have my paws crossed for everything to be all okey dokey.

Twix, I'm so very sorry you have any health issues to worry about. We rushed to Google to look up Cushing's - just in case. What we read said it could be successfully treated for years, so maybe the worst case wouldn't be so terribly worse. It's a good thing your Mom is vigilant and that she's gets you good care.

Oh sweetie! Sorry to hear about the bladder infection and the hair loss. TaiChi (at 20) was pretty much bald (and it was symmetrical) but at her advanced age, and with a whole ton of health issues that you DON'T have (although with the bladder infection, have them check your kidney function - I know it sounds like a leap, but for some reason our vet thought the two might be linked with TaiChi). Hopefully it will be something simple to treat. Paws are crossed for you!

I am so sorry you had to go to the Vet and suffer all those tortures!
I hope the meds work fast so you will be better soon!
Like you, I suffer hair loss too. And it is caused by a bad thyroid. I take a pill every morning and everything is under control.
I don't know much about Cushing's Disease but I guess it is better to wait to see what your results say so your Vet will give you the right treatment.
I will have my paws crossed for you!
Take care

dear Twix,
We are so sorry to hear about your problems. I don't know what's happening but we have similar issues here. Lucy, our female dachshund had some bad days, too. We haven't got to the vet, yet. We suppose she is having kidney infection. The urine test will tell if there are some stones or sand. Hope not.
We wish you to get better soon and read more about that.

Oh no Twix, we are so sorry to hear about your traumatic vet visit :( We hope that your diagnosis is the good one (not that any diagnosis can be good) and if it's the other one, we hope that it is in the very early stages.

Now, as far as the hair loss, you can join the hair loss club with me, Chewy! I have no hair on my tummy and I'm starting to go thin on my head, something about Chi pattern baldness...but now we can be hairless together, BOL!!

Anywho, we are putting our paws and hooman hands together and praying that everything is okay with our friend Twix!

Hi Twix, we are so sorry to hear abut your vet visit. The bladder infection should clear up with some meds. As for the hair loss and talk of the thyroid and Cushing's, we had experience with both. Dakota took meds for thyroid for years and it was well conrolled. She also had Cushing's as you may remember. Mom says she doesn't remember Dakota having any obvious hair loss other than her fur took a long time to grow back in after they shaved her for her ultrasound. If it is Cushing's, there are a few options for meds that work well for most dogs to control the disease and prolong the life of the dog. In our case, the meds didn't work for Dakota. There is a lot of useful information on the web about both and yahoo has a great group for it as well. Best at this point to wait and see what the blood work shows. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us. theoppack AT gmail DOT com.

Oh, Twix, please, please keep us posted on your results. My sister had the same concerns and after A LOT of testing for Cushings, it turned out to be Hypothyroidism. Once she was on a pill for that, it didn't bother her for the rest of her years. I'm hoping this is an easy fix for you too! Any other symptoms besides the hair loss? Get well soon!! Did you get the flowers I posted for you last Thursday? I hope they make you smile, despite the V.E.T. stress!

Grammy is praying for you Twix, and we have our thoughts on you and our paws crossed, too! We are glad that you were so strong when you went to see the V-E-T. Grammy says we (Gimli & Pippin) are going to have to go soon for some tutoring because we keep fighting. I'm not sure I like the sounds of that... I don't like what all I've read of my friend's V-E-T visits, and Mama Dott and Mercy didn't have a great time when they went and got sprayed!
