Twix is sick.....Post from Mom

As many of you know, Twix has had some ongoing health problems for a while.  I haven't updated all her friends lately about her newest issues but she has gotten much worse in the past 24 hours and I need to know if anyone out there recognizes any of these symptoms.

First of all, as has been posted on the blog, she has had blood in her urine for quite some time.  We were under the impression that this was nothing to worry about after seeing a specialist and having a sonogram.  She didn't have any masses or even anything that looked suspicious when we had that done this past summer. The blood comes and goes and other than that she seemed to be just her normal self.

A couple of months ago, she stopped eating her dry dog food and started losing weight.  She usually weighs in the 11 pound range and she had gotten down to a little over 9 pounds.  She would sometimes eat canned food and sometimes she wouldn't and then it got to the point she just wouldn't eat it at all.  We started cooking for her.  Chicken breasts and rice, hamburger and rice, just about anything else that our vet suggested.  Again, sometimes she would eat and sometimes she wouldn't.  It is so hard for me to reach down and hand her a slice of cheese and have her turn her nose away.  She is the dog who will eat anything! We finally realized that she seemed to like sweet things so I started using sweet potatoes instead of rice.  That lasted for one meal.  We started feeding her yogurt and she will eat some of that each day but no more than a half a cup of yogurt per day.  She will sometimes eat some plain chicken or hamburger.  Somehow, she has gained some of her weight back and is now at about 10 pounds. I really don't understand how that is possible since she eats so little but I figure it is because she wasn't eating at all before.

They usually do blood work when we take her in to the vet's office. It will come back normal except for a high white blood cell count so then we put her on antibiotics. When we have the blood work rechecked her white count is normal.  Then the next time the blood work is done (sometimes just a week or two later) her white count is high again.

She has lost some of her coordination over the past 6 months or so but we had attributed it to her age.  She had started to trip going up or down the stairs.  She was on an anti inflammatory medication but we were concerned that could be affecting her appetite so we took her off of it. When she trips, she may slide down a couple of steps but she never fell and once she got her footing she was able to make it the rest of the way.

Yesterday, I was at an appointment with my mom and her Daddy was home with her.  Taffy was at the vet recovering from her spay and teeth cleaning.  Twix's daddy had gone to the basement and heard her go upstairs but then heard her fall down all the stairs.  When he came running up to check on her she was standing at the bottom of the stairs dazed.  He checked her over and she didn't seem to have anything wrong other than being dazed.  When I got home she didn't even move off the couch to greet me which is strange. We thought maybe she was a little sore from her tumble.  Not too long after that she started doing this strange jerky thing.  I called the vet and they said we should take her in.  I had this fear that she would stop before we got there due to excitement/nerves.  I took a quick video so that they would be able to see exactly what she was doing.

She is usually quite nervous at the vet's office but yesterday she just stood there.  They checked her over and thought maybe she had a seizure but weren't sure.  They checked her blood work and her white cell count is high again.  While we were waiting for her blood work to come back, she fell asleep in my arms, belly up, like a baby. She would NEVER have done that before. And she was totally out, almost hard to wake. Once I put her down, she was stumbling when she walked and if she stood still she would lean forward to the point that her hind legs would start to lift off the floor before she would catch herself.

Today, she seems the same. Not really much change at all except maybe the head jerk isn't quite as often.  We are taking her back to the vet tomorrow for a follow up.  Dr. Abby wasn't there when we went yesterday but will be there tomorrow.  She has been telling us for a while that Twix definitely has something wrong but her symptoms are very vague and we are having a hard time pin pointing it.  These new symptoms almost seem neurological.

I was hoping maybe, just maybe, someone out there has seen this same thing with one of their dogs or might have a clue of what is going on.  She has totally lost her spark and it breaks my heart to see her like this:

On another note, at my mom's appointment yesterday they decided to postpone her transplant.  The second biopsy came back as leukemia OR a reaction to something going on inside her body.  They don't want to do the transplant on Monday until they have concrete answers.  The doctor said he is sure she has the Leukemia from her blood work and symptoms but it is his job to leave no stone unturned prior to doing the transplant.  So, they will be getting the slides from her first biopsy and comparing them and if the pathologist still isn't sure they will either perform another biopsy and/or send the slides to Mayo Clinic. They said it will probably be a month or more before we proceed.

Thank you for your prayers and power of the paw!

Please feel free to link to this post.
I feel like the more who read it the better the chance someone might recognize what is happening.

Have they considered Intervertebral Disk Disease? It's so common in the breed. Feel better soon, Twix, you are in our thoughts!

My very first thought was Vestibular Syndrome or in layman's terms, Old Dog Syndrome. Please ask your doctor about it. It can be treated. My dog had it, he was 15. He responded to treatment but he was very old and died not long after (but not from that, just from being old).

Twix just may be suffering from being an old dog with health problems. I hope you can find out something from the vet, and I offer you the Power of the Paw and all our prayers that she gets well. I know how awful it is to have a sick, older dog.

We'll be thinking about you and sending good vibes too.

I'm not sure what would be going, but it almost does sound neurological, judging by your last few symptoms. I was thinking blood sugar levels maybe? But the white blood count wouldn't explain that-have her kidneys been checked? Sorry, if I am going over things already done. I have just started reading your blog.

I don't have any idea what to say other than poor Twix. She really looks like something isn't right. I was thinking maybe stroke or seizure. I will say some prayers. So sorry to hear about the setback for your Mom. You have a lot on your plate. Mega hugs to you.

Some things that come to mind are Vestibular Disease, a seizure and serious infection.

Our first Greyhound had a spinal tumor or issue that hit her very hard. She had some of the same symptoms, but not all. She had a very elevated white cell count -- something the vet said they usually saw after a dog had been hit by a car, and we never did find out why she had that. At times she completely lost the use of her back legs, but would regain it quickly. She was put on an overnight IV of steroids and that did help short term for her. She did have epilepsy from the time she was four years old, but she didn't have unusual seizures that were related to the spinal issue.

We have fingers and paws crossed here that you find some answers and that Twix starts feeling better soon!

Thinking of you guys. It almost looks like a seizure. Maddie gets those, and every muscle in her body tenses up and gets very hard and stiff. She takes phenobarbital to control her seizures, and that seems to be working. Not a clue about the blod in the urine. . . best wishes to you guys.

It really sounds like Vestibular.

MayzieMom here. I'm so sorry to hear that Twix if feeling so bad. And I know you must be scared to death. I don't have any advice for you on what may be causing her symptoms but as far as her losing weight - have you tried Nutrical? It's a high calorie supplement and supposedly helps stimulate the appetite as well. (http://www.amazon.com/Tom-Lyn-Nutri-4-25oz-tube/dp/B00068JT3U)

All our paws and fingers are crossed for dear, sweet Twix. I hope that you're able to find something to make her feel better soon. Hang in there. We're thinking of all of you.

What's Her Name is crazy (everyone knows this), but she thinks it might be Cushings, or something similar- Thai had similar symtoms- the falling down of his rear legs, the loss of appetite, etc. (Thai also had IVDD surgery almost five years ago and does have neurological problems) Thai's rear legs kept getting wek over the summer, and are acting that way again.

We apologize, but WHN does have Cushings on the brain since Thai was diagnosed.

Big hugs to both you and Twix. Based on the video, I have to say that she is either having micro seisures or some equilibrium problems.

When you fold a paw under, does she fix it? Have they explored Addison's disease?

The Ladies of Beaglebratz Manor said...

Mom B-bratz here. After watching that video I can well imagine what you are feeling when you see Twix behave in a way that she has little control over. The summer before my little Oreo went to the Bridge (he was 16+ he accidentally hit his head on a solid wooden table leg (about 5 inches in diameter) and started acting in a similar way plus he would only turn one way. I rushed him to the vet and the vet also discovered he had developed rapid eye twitching - his eyes would move ONLY to the right - very rapidly. Whatever it is, does seem to be neurological in origin. I would talk to your vet about the Vestibular Syndrome - this does affect their balance and ability to walk without being dizzy. We were never sure what made Oreo act that way altho the suggestion of a stroke was also made. Also the Intervertebral Disk Disease is a very common problem in Doxies. And it can affect their ability to walk and balance also. It is also a problem in humans which is how I know about it and the symptoms are almost identical. That could have been increasing slightly and then Twix's fall could have triggered it into full blown problem. Like someone else suggested - the varying white cell count could well be totally unrelated and just an ongoing problem.

Mom B-bratz here again - and by all means, I am thinking and sending healing vibes to all of you.

Oh my heavens Twix mom, I do not like to read this. It breaks my heart and my eyes just filled up when I watched the video 7 times. I'm not sure what could be causing the shakes and tremors and her being off balance...but it scares me. I don't think it could be IVDD because Albert didn't act like that (not that that means anything though). His back legs were just completely paralyzed.
Anyway, I am clueless but I hope someone here can help and we definately have you all in our thoughts and prayers. We send you and your famoliy our love and hugs

Throughout my lifetime where there have always been dogs in my life, I've seen many of the symptoms that Twix has......just not all at once. I wouldn't think it could be IVDD as this usually starts out with severe pain before it progresses. In all honesty, I think I would take Twix to a Specialist at this point. Our vet always suggests seeing a specialist when something with many symptoms is involved simply for the reason that a specialist is trained to recognize symptoms and how they relate to each other in a particular disease (or combination of diseases). A specialist hospital also usually has more equipment and facilities to check for more things quicker than your average vet would have access to.

Our prayers are with you and the paws in our home are crossed (all 44 of them). Also..additional prayers for Grandma are on the way too. Your plate is very full right now but always know your friends in Blogville are here for you whenever you need us.

My momma only had to see about 5 seconds of the video and her recognized the very same behavior that two of my angel sisters had in their older years.

My momma could never describe it very well....her called it more than a twitch, but not quite a seizure. She took her sweet Jessie to a couple of vets, and they never did give her an answer that made her satisfied. Basically they told her it was a doggie old age neurology symptom.

Many, many, many healing hugs are being sent your way!!!

this sounds aweful. i don't have any ideas and I don't know what you've checked for yet, but it sounds like an infection. did they test for tick bourne diseases? what about ultrasounding the digestive system and intestines. i just heard about a doggie who was very sick and they didn't know what it was. turned out it was a hole in the intestine and it caused leakage and the dog got septic. when they finally found it, it was too late to do surgery which would have save him.

whatever it is, i sure hope they find out soon. Twix is a dollface.

Miss Puddles sent us over. We are very sorry that Twix is not feeling well. When we read blood in the urine, we thought UTI. Then as we read on, we just don't know. That is alot of symptoms, and sounds like several blood tests, with no luck figuring anything out. We agree with Amber DaWeenie, take her to a specialist. We will be purring for Miss Twix to feel better soon!

We also have our paws crossed and our heads bowed in prayer for Miss Twix, and for her grandmother. If the head twitching only started after the fall down the stairs, mama is thinking concussion. The white blood count elevation and nausea do sound like renal or liver disease. Lord knows your plate is full, but if there's a good specialty clinic or a vet school near enough, we'd high tail it over there. We certainly send our best wishes and strongest healing vibes your way.

Oh dear Twix! I'm so sad to read that you're not feeling like yourself! I can't view the video right now (this laptop blocks them) but by the symptoms I was wondering about a stroke or a seizure. Not sure that encompasses all of the symptoms though. I hope you get some answers FAST! We have all of our paws (and fingers) crossed for you and are sending up lots of prayers.

Hopeful wags,

We are so very very sorry you are sick, Twix.Even as we write this we are hoping you are feeling better.
Mummy watched your video carefully. Those are ticks, certainly. But DOESNOT appear vestibular. In age-related vestibular degeneration, there is general unsteadiness, not ticks. Besides it is a gradual process and will not show any changes in white count.
Serious infection of any kind would have been accompanied by high fever.
Seizure is a symtom of a disease, not a disease itself. and true seizures are violent and will lead to unconsciousness or periods of inactivity at least. It doesn't sound like that.
Ticks can be very common in kidney disease leading to uraemia. But you said her kidney profile has been investigated. So renal disease is ruled out.

mummy is thinking very seriously of Liver Disease.
It is very common in older dogs and can be due to accumulated toxins, tumours, autoimmune, or even parasitic infestation/worms.
It can cause weight loss, lack of appetite, vomiting, dullness, unsteadiness and even bleeding due to the liver's inability to produce clotting factors.

Have you had her liver function tests done? are they alright?
Please get them done if you haven't.
You can put her on some enzymes and liver support medications. These will not lead to any problems even if her liver is not diseased.
In fact, older dogs are advised to have occasional liver de-toxyfying meds from time to time, just like humans.

Some coagulant, that is medication to stop bleeding may be needed if bleeding continues. Or else she will get anaemic which will further deteriorate her condition.

Please get a second opinion from another vet, if possible. Mummy says you can never be too careful.
If her liver is diseased, better restrict her to the MOST necessary medications ONLY.
Trial doses of anti-inflammatory or anti biotics will only make it worse.

Maybe you can get a brain scan done to rule out one of the common causes of seizures or ticks or unsteadiness like symptoms - neurocysticercosis or worms in the brain. it is very much curable unlike a true brain tumour.

we hope this answer will help you in some way

We feel for you and our heart goes out to you.
we are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers and are hoping you will be well again.

Has Diabetes been explored? It seems to be one of the common age related problems in dachshunds.
But then, routine blood sugar tests must have been done.

We are really worried and hope someone will be able to help and you will soon find a good vet and a cure.

Hi - this is my first visit to your blog (via BlogPaws). First, I am so very sorry for Twix's condition. Considering how I feel about my duo, it breaks my heart to know what you must be going through. I am not sure where you are located but we take Spike and Dru to the Red Bank Veterinary hospital in NJ, http://redbankveterinaryhospital.net/, and they have specialists for everything. Anytime I have called them, they have been more than willing to help over the phone. I know it's a long shot but maybe you could speak to one of the specialists there and they might have some info for you. Their phone number is 732-747-3636. When my cat got very sick, they walked me through a lot over the phone. You are all in my prayers.

We are so sorry that Twix is having such problems and we so hope that she'll be diagnosed and treated quickly. We wish we had some ideas to offer, but we don't. However, when Alpha Mom comes in, and if the internet is still working, we'll show her this post and see if she has anything to offer. Sometimes she knows things. It's kind of a longshot that she'd know anything more than everyone else who's posted, but worth a shot.

lots and lots of healing licks and wishes from us and our whole family.

Hey weiner dude. We came by way of Mango's blog. We're not vets but have a couple of ideas...

Have you had a STERILE urine test done for infection? (Sterile tests are the ones where the vet extracts the urine - your folks do not bring a sample in.) We're wondering if the blood in the urine could be a UTI that moved into the kidneys.

What did your blood tests show? If a UTI resulted in a kidney infection, your kidneys might not be functioning properly causing a "poisoning" of your blood. This might be causing seizures or other dizzy and strange behaviors. You would certainly feel really awful and might not want to eat.

Are you on pain meds? Many dogs won't eat when they're in pain. But make sure your kidneys and liver are in good shape before taking any of that stuff. Your body needs to be able to filter it properly.

Dogs love strong tastes, so maybe a VERY LIGHT dusting of garlic on your food might help. (Too much garlic is bad, but we get a tiny bit at times.) Pups also like sweet tastes, so maybe some babyfood applesauce will make you eat. Mom used to use the unflavored Pedialyte to keep me hydrated when I was really sick when first adopted. It helps with hydration.

Have you been tested for tick fever?

Hope you're feeling better soon!

Tucker said...

Oh nos, I don't like Twix being sick. Please get better. The only bit of advice we can give is blood sugar levels. When blood sugar levels of low in animals they loose coordination and appear bery sleepy. Kitty brother Troubles (RIP) loss the use of his back legs and would fall down when his sugar plummeted. If the vet did bloodwork they would see the sugar levels though.
I'm sending my bestest get well thoughts!

You have alot on your plate...I'm sorry you're going through all this. My thoughts are definitely with you. I had some suspicions as I read through Twix's symptoms and I did a bit of research before posting. Forgive me if I'm repeating anyone's comments from above here...

Have there been any changes in urine production? Small, large amounts? Change in thirst at all?

This sounds like a possible kidney issue - which really should have been caught in bloodwork if present. Not sure if there are any relevant values in past bloodwork that might indicate kidney function decline, or acute kidney issues. Also if bloodwork isn't current, then new bloodwork may show a more current change in function.
My first thought was bladder stones - in females, these stones can be passed while urinating(unlike in males who if blocked, need immediate surgery). If she's been developing and passing stones on and off over time, this will tax her kidneys. Also, acute onset can cause neurological symptoms due to systemic toxicity.
Have they taken an xray and urinalysis to rule out stones recently? This is a relatively cheap way to start. I'd also recommend bloodwork to check her kidney values. Here's a website that might help...

http://www.gopetsamerica.com/dog-health/dog-kidney-failure.aspx

I'm not a vet, and I leave the diagnosing to the doctors, but it's my educated guess as a vet tech.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that any advice you get from all of us here might help. Please keep us posted

Hi there,

This definitely looks like Geriatric Vestibular Syndrome. The high WBC count indicates a response to an infection/inflammation occurring in the vestibular system (located in the ear). This center controls balance. The head tilt is a classic sign of this disease. The lack of interest in food is most likely due to the disease's effect on her fine motor control. Often, dogs will only be able to take food from the hand of his/her owner (because the dog cannot pick the food out of the bowl). I would presume that is why she would eat wet food but not dry food as dry food requires much more finite control to "pick up" as opposed to just licking up wet food. Here is a link to information about the disease: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-vestibular-neuritis.htm

Has your vet done a neuro exam?

Oh Twix... Maggie and Mitch asked us to drop by and have a look to see if we can offer any insight.

I'm so sorry you are not feeling yourself, and mum feels bad for your mommy, it must be hard on her.

Mum says that personality change (ie, you lying on your back for your belly to be scratched) combined with drunken walk, wobbly-ness, inappetence could be signs of a brain tumour. My thought I had a pituitary macroadenoma (brain tumour) too because things that used to make me excited no longer did, and I wasn't a b*tch anymore. I also stumble some. However, as it turned out, I had Cushing's disease that required meds. Once I started the meds, I began to slowly return to my former self. I still stumble, but it most likely originates from cervical region of my spine, unrelated to the brain.

An MRI would show brain tumours as well as spinal lesions. But it requires anesthetic.

I really hope there is nothing major going on with you and I will be sending you lots of AireZENS!! Hugs to you and your mom.

Love nibbles,
Miss Sunshade
